Broadleaf, deciduous small tree or a shrub, often multi-stemmed, with an upright, oval habit, to 15 ft tall and 10 ft wide (4.5 x 3 m). The leaves emerge purple-maroon, becoming maroon-green. The white petals of the typical bell-shaped flowers have maroon sepals (calyx). The white flowers contrast nicely with the maroon foliage.Sun to part shade, best in evenly moist well-drained, acidic soil, subject to chlorosis (yellowing leaves) in alkaline soil.
